Porporela beach
Porporela is a rocky bathing area in the Old Town found just behind the old city harbour. The pier at Porporela was built by the Austro-Hungarians with construction beginning in 1873. In 1879, the stormy south wind washed up a large stone weighing three tonnes on to Porporela which was then used in the construction of the pier. This stone remains today and is an attraction for visitors to Dubrovnik.
It is interesting that the area has bathers year-round, even in winter when the weather is nice and it's not raining. The place is known for its romance, especially in the evening.
