Because of its medieval old town, which to this day has preserved its authentic appearance, Dubrovnik attracts many film producers, who find it an ideal location for filming popular movies and TV series.
The most famous show filmed in Dubrovnik in recent years is Game of Thrones, where the city gets the role of King's Landing. Dubrovnik city walls took on a slightly different look in the show, but are still very much recognizable. HBO's successful show was filmed at the Belvedere hotel, the Arboretum in Trsteno, the Gradac park, Fort of St. Lawrence...
Šulić beach was the setting for the naval battle of Blackwater Bay, where King Stannis Baratheon tried to attack and take King's Landing and overthrow King Joffrey.
Renaissance Arboretum in Trsteno represents the king's garden where conspiracies and plots are devised, and the Fort of St. Lawrence is the Red Keep.
The scenes from Qarth were filmed on Lokrum island, and when you walk by the Minčeta tower you will be following the footsteps of Daenerys Targaryen while she desperately tries to enter the House of the Undying to save her dragons.
Besides Dubrovnik, Game of Thrones was filmed in Split on multiple locations such as the famous Diocletian's Palace. Game of Thrones locations in Croatia were mainly used for shooting exteriors.

This is not the only popular show that was filmed in the south of Croatia. There is also the Borgias, a European TV show, which brings us back to the Renaissance, precisely to the time of the rise of Pope Alexander VI. The producers of this very popular series also chose Arboretum in Trsteno as an important location. Scenes were filmed in front of the Rector’s Palace, where Lucrezia Borgia fell from her horse.
Also, sites that are used in the medieval story are Stradun, Fort of St. Lawrence, Lokrum, the Pile Gate...
In Korčula director Sergio Castellitto filmed parts for his film Venuto al Mondo starring celebrity Penelope Cruz . In addition to the island of Korčula, the movie was filmed on the Pelješac peninsula.
The TV show Missing with Ashley Judd in the lead role was also filmed in Dubrovnik. Locations that were included in the series are the Sponza Palace, Fortress Revelin, Scheherazade palace and Stradun. Ashley Judd plays the mother who searches for her son who went missing on a holiday in Italy.
An American movie about the superhero Captain America was filmed in Dubrovnik in 1990, and the city was in fact the home of the main villain.
Also, the sites of the Pearl of the Adriatic were used in the British film The Secret Invasion (1964), the story being set in the World War II era. Director Roger Corman was reading a feature about Dubrovnik on his way to his dentist's and was so delighted with the city that he had decided to make the film there.
The BBC filmed its miniseries Casanova in Dubrovnik, as well as Three Men in The Boat. Orson Welles often shot scenes for his movies in Dubrovnik, and in Dubrovnik and Croatia the scenes of fighting between the cowboys and the Indians in the series Winnetou were also filmed.
Also, numerous Croatian and Yugoslav films found their filming locations in this corner of the world.
Besides being popular for filming, the world's star actors and actresses gladly come to Dubrovnik on vacation. Just to mention some: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Tom Cruise, Richard Gere, Owen Wilson, Kevin Spacey, Woody Harrelson, Mickey Rourke, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta Jones, Nick Nolte, John Malkovich, Roger Moore, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and others.
